Covid-19 has been around for three years, but we’re still learning more about the virus every day. Now new research is helping understand a symptom, brain fog, that a number of people experience during and after the virus.
About 15 percent of people suffer from long-term effects of the virus. Brain fog is just one of the symptoms tied to long Covid. Problems with memory and thinking are common after contracting Covid. In fact, research indicates about 22 percent of people with long-haul Covid experience this issue.
New research out of Germany is now showing that the spike protein from the virus is present in brain tissue of animals and people after death. Circulating blood helps deliver these spike proteins. The proteins can stay inside small openings in bone marrow of the skull called niches. It can also live in the meninges, which are thin layers of cells that are a buffer between the skull and the brain. The thought is the spike protein can use these channels to enter the brain itself. The results suggest that these proteins may build up, cause cell death and lead to inflammation. That could in turn, cause the long-haul Covid symptoms like brain fog.
Hyperbaric oxygen treatments continue to show promise for those suffering from long-haul Covid. HBOT treatments provide 100 percent pure oxygen under pressure. This can help stimulate the body’s natural healing process and reduce inflammation.
Many of our patients at Swanson Hyperbarics have found relief from Covid symptoms, including brain fog, with hyperbaric oxygen treatments.
